Is there anything better than the nerve-wracking feeling of watching the roulette ball bounce around the wheel, hoping it lands in the right pocket? Roulette has been around for several hundred years now, but it's more entertaining than ever. This is mainly due to the many different variations of the game, which offer enormous variety and diversity. The most famous versions are European, American and French roulette, which are very similar to each other, but their small differences play a big role. In this article, we will take a closer look at the differences and introduce you to some special variants, including games with the possibility of triggering a bonus game or winning a gigantic jackpot.

European Roulette

Outside of American casinos, European roulette is the most common roulette variant that you will also come across in the live casino. On the table there is a grid with possibilities for outside and inside bets. Inside you will find 37 ways to bet on single numbers, from 0 to 36. 18 of these numbers are red, 18 are black and one is green, which is zero. Outside the number field you will find twelve more ways to place bets. Of these, eight involve different number combinations. Another two fields offer the possibility of betting on red or black, and another two, on even or odd.

American Roulette

American roulette is similar to European roulette, but there is one fundamental difference: the tableau consists of 38 numbers – besides zero, there is also a double zero (00). The game originated in Europe and was brought to the USA by French immigrants at the end of the 18th century. The American casinos were not fully convinced by the game at first, because they thought that the house advantage was too small. So they added another number to the game, the double zero. This was the birth of American Roulette. The payouts are the same in European and American Roulette. Therefore, the double zero in the American variant results in a lower average return to player (RTP). If you’re wondering what is the best place to play American roulette, check out this review of Playamo casino.

French Roulette

This roulette variant is often mistakenly lumped together with the European variant. In some casinos, the French roulette offered lacks the special features of this variant. Although the design of the tables is very different compared to the European variant, you will find the same numbers and possibilities to place your bets on both tables. The big difference in French Roulette are two specific rules called "En Prison" and "La Partage", which should apply to all 1:1 payouts, for example, even/odd or red/black.

"En Prison" ensures that these bets are not automatically lost when the ball lands on zero. Instead, all bets on 1:1 odds are left in their positions and apply to the next game round. If you win with them in the next game round, your bet will be returned to you. If "La Partage" applies, half the bet is returned to the player as soon as the ball lands on the green zero. These two rules give the player better odds and reduce the casino's advantage. This makes the return to the player higher than in European Roulette.

Live Roulette

Live Roulette is the perfect choice for anyone looking for an interactive and authentic gaming experience. Another advantage is that you can also play in the comfort of your couch or while traveling. Thanks to the latest high-definition camera technologies, it is possible to bring a real casino to your living room. There, you'll have the opportunity to chat with friendly dealers and interact with your fellow players while placing bets from the comfort of your computer or mobile device. Just like in a traditional casino, in the live casino you can watch the ball being thrown into the cauldron and slowly finding its way into one of the pockets. This creates a real and authentic roulette experience that you should definitely try.

Double Ball roulette

Double Ball Roulette is a unique roulette variant that is played with two balls instead of one. For inside bets (numbers 0 to 36) it is enough for one ball to land on the matching square, but for outside bets (e.g. red/black) both balls must land in matching squares. Since the probabilities of this variant differ from ordinary roulette, the payouts are also different. Just like the Triple Bonus Spin, there is also a jackpot to be won in Double Ball, which is a little smaller. If a bet is placed on the jackpot number and both balls hit the number, the prize is 1,200 times your bet.
